Mole Quantities Lab

Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Measure the mass of beaker and a teaspoon of aluminum powder. Then measure the mass of the beaker with the powder in it. Subtract the mass of the beaker to find the mass of the aluminum powder. Divide that number (mass of aluminum) by the atomic mass of aluminum. Multiply by 1 mole (6.02 x 1023). B. Empty beaker: 34.237g Beaker with aluminum: 36.633g Aluminum: 2.369g Atomic mass of Aluminum: 13

C.

2.369 g 6.02 10 23 atoms = 1.1 10 23 atoms 13 1

Concluding Statement: There are 1.1x1023 atoms in one level teaspoon of aluminum powder.

2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. Measure the mass of an empty beaker, than add one teaspoon of iron into it. Subtract the full breaker from the empty beaker to get the mass of the iron. Then divide that by the atomic mass of iron. That tells you the amount of mols that are in one level teaspoon. Then find out how many teaspoons are needed to get 1.00 mol of iron powder. B. Beaker: 28.696g Beaker with iron: 34.287g Iron: 5:591g Atomic mass of Iron: 26 1 mol of iron: 55.85g C.

1teaspoon 55.85g = 9.990 teaspoons 5.591g 1mol Fe

Concluding Statement: 9.990 level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder.
