The King Henry VIII consolidate British rule over the island in 1542 and introduced Protestantism. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Irish are dispossessed of their lands, which become the property of the English colonists. In 1801, Ireland is integrated in the United Kingdom by the "Act of Union" and its parliament is submissive to Westminster and excludes Catholics. In 1922 constitutes the Irish Free State in the Anglo-Irish Treaty, bringing together the southern counties, a Catholic majority. The north of the island, the Ulster Protestant majority, remains connected to the UK.
