journal#4 08-30-2013 After reading and watching the lm, combined with the class discussion, I think literacy

is not only the ability to read the write, but also the resources you can have access to. Literacy is more like a social achievement, which is impacted by government, media, nancial status, gender, age and the traditional thoughts among the society. In the article written by Brandt, it points out that the environment is an important sponsor of your literacy, thats true. Now, here is my story. First of all, parents is the rst and the most crucial sponsor of literacy in my life. My mother read stories and fairytales for me every night until I went to primary school. They shaped my idea about the world unconsciously by their behaviors and thoughts and thus my literacy is very alike to theirs. After I grown up, their literacy also inuence mine. Both of my parents are working in an investment company, so I have more knowledge about banking and investment because of them. Secondly, my parents are the sponsors for me to reach another level of literacy-----schools. They pay the tuition and make me enable to learn how to read and write, and they support me to gain literacies from textbooks, teachers as well as my classmates. Whats more, in my family, my parents make big decisions for me. Because Im a girl, and the traditional thought towards a girl is that they should care more about family instead of their career. So my parent dont want me to be so overwhelmed by study and a Master degree is totally enough. Their idea unconsciously regulate the literacies I have access to because of the culture and my gender.
