Exercises for lecture Fields and Waves Maxwells equations, electrostatics, vector calculus
return: 29.10.2013 (20 points) 1. Write down the dierential form of the macroscopic Maxwell equations (in SI units). Describe the variables used (with units). Obtain the macroscopic Maxwell equations in the dierential forms for static elds, i.e without explicit time dependence (that is d/dt = 0). Which conclusions can be made from static form of Maxwells equations ? 2. Complete the macroscopic Maxwell equations by the constitutive relations (material relations), between the electric and magnetic elds and ux densities for the time domain. 3. In electrostatics the scalar potential is often used. How is that dened? In the case of a single point charge, the scalar potential can be calculated analytically. Specify it. 4. Obtain Poissons and Laplaces equations from the dierential form of the macroscopic Maxwell equations for static elds (by specifying the electric eld as a function of the scalar potential). 5. How is the capacitance of a capacitor dened ? How is the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor dened ? What is the energy stored in a parallel-plate capacitor ? 6. Verify if vector E = yex xey may represent a static electric eld. 7. Verify if vector B = xex yey may represent a static magnetic eld. If so, calculate the current density associated with it. 8. If the magnetic ux density in a region of free space (J = 0) is given by B = B0 z cos(t)ey and if it is known that the time-varying electric eld associated with it has only an x component: (a) Use Faradays law to nd E = Ex ex (b) Use the obtained value of E in Amperes law to determine the magnetic ux density B . (c) Compare the obtained result in part (b) with the original expression of the magnetic eld. Comment on your answer.
