Loma 1 Maria Loma Kristen Foster CO 150. 401 October 23, 2013 Should Abortion be Allowed?

An Annotated Bibliography This annotated bibliography was compiled in order to explore a long life topic of abortion. My interest in this topic started during middle school when girls my own age started to talk about it. It would rise arguments of yes one should be allowed to get an abortion or no they shouldnt and some said that it depended on the situation. After listening to their arguments, I began to wonder: Why would they decided or not decided to get an abortion? Under what circumstance one should be allowed to get an abortion? From these questions I thought of more of which I hope to answer during my research. The main research question that guided my research is: should women be allowed to get an abortion? I started my research on October 3, 2013 and ended on October 20, 2013. Four sources appear in this annotated bibliography. These sources included one academic article, one book, one news article written and a website written in the past year.

Loma 2 Hull, N.E.H, Williamjames Hoffer, Peter Charles Hoffer. The Abortion Rights Controversy in America. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2004. Print. The book, The Abortion Rights in America, a legal reader was written for mainly woman and anyone else who wants to know about abortion. Their thesis is how abortion has been a controversy in the nation for such a long time. Hull and Hoffers use mainly cases that have to do with abortion to prove their point. According to the author, before abortion became illegal, bearing and birthing children was a private affair.(10) Throughout the years there has been many cases about abortion; such as the very famous one, Roe vs. Wade.

All three authors are history teachers at a University. (4, 5) Hull even got her degree in womans history. (3) The only limitation to this source mainly has information from 1848-2002.

The Abortion Rights Controversy in America has information on how and why women decided to get an abortion: also stories and cases. Also, it gives me information on three abstract stakeholders: people who are for it, against it, and those who care.

Loma 3 Krattenmaker, Tom. "Abortion's middle ground? Reducing them." USA Today May 3, 2010: Academic Search Premier. Web. 18 Oct. 2013. This news article is a research article and was written for those who read USA Today. Krattenmakers thesis is how abortion has made African-Americans an endangered species.(par. 1) He uses mainly statistics within his article. Krattenmaker states how 39% of the countrys abortion are blacks. Also, most of the abortion clinics are located in black neighborhoods.

Krattenmaker is a news article writer for USA Today. He writes mostly about religion in todays life. (2) The only limitation to this source is that he mainly talks about AfricanAmerican women.

This article has information on how African-American women decided to get an abortion. It also has information on two abstract stake holders, people who care and those who dont want abortion to be legal. The article talks about how abortion is eliminating the African-American population and Krattenmaker is trying to figure out how they all come together.

Loma 4 Possible Physical Side Affects.Americanpregnancy.com. N.P. July 2013. Web. October 20, 2013. This article is an Op-ed article and it was written for women who wanted to know the side effects after having an abortion. The author was giving information on possible side effects after deciding to get an abortion. They use mainly primary sources like a health professional and an abortion doctor. The author clearly states that the side effects will be different for every woman. Also, they let you know how many weeks after the abortion you might feel the side effects.

The fact that they dont mention an author makes it hard to know to trust what they are saying. They did state where they got their information which was from a government website.(1) The limitation to this source is you dont know how far along the women were when they got the abortion.

It answered my question on the possible side effects after an abortion. It includes information on three abstract stake holders perspectives for the people who agree with abortion, those who dont agree with it and the people who care for those who are thinking about getting an abortion.

Loma 5 Lovett, Ian. California Expands Availability of Abortions. Nytimes.com. 9, October, 2013. Web. October 20, 2013 California Expands Availability of Abortions is an op-ed article that was written for women who are trying to get an abortion. The article uses primary sources such as studies and interviews. Lovett included interviews from Ms. Atkins, who wrote the bill, and Mr. Johnston who works in the National Right to Lifes Western. He also had information from a pilot program conducted in 2007.

Ian Lovett is a journalist for the New York Times. He has written about 35 stories for the New York Times. One limitation to this article is Lovett doesnt include the other bills that were passed along.

This source helps me know what people are doing about abortion today and what side they are on. It includes information on three abstract stake holders: people who are for it, against it and those who care. Lovett states how Mr. Johnston doesnt think its safer.
