Collins First Year Composition Portfolio Introduction The overall purpose of the Literary essay is as simple as it sounds: to discuss our literacy. Literacy is simply the ability to read and write. Although many people fall unaware to it, the environments we grow up in serve to be extremely influential to our literacy and that is exactly what was to be covered in our literacy narrative essays. In preparation of the assignment, we read a few texts by authors Amy Tan, and Sherman Alexie and more. In their essays, they explained personal experiences which influenced the way they read and write today. It was very helpful, because at first I had no idea what to write about. It was much easier to understand the underlying processing involved in the development of our literacy through cultural exposure. My literacy narrative generates around my family and my health. Those are the two basic concepts which grew to be the most important influences within my literacy.
