Title: A Quest Suggested Pacing: Lessons 5-6 Rubric: Narrative Tri 1 Graded Traits: Ideas/Organization/Conventions Teacher Directions: Students are given the texts, research, and any additional information about the assignment. Assure that sufficient blank paper and writing utensils are available for student note-taking. (Read Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude during your regular reading program.) Student Directions: Read all directions, the assignment, and the rubric before beginning any part of the performance task.

Part 1 [35 minutes] 1. You will read Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude, Rosas Adventure (Journeys On Level Leveled Reader), and view Quests Power Point. Take notes because you may want to refer to your notes while writing. 2. Answer the given questions. They will help you think about the sources youve read, which should help you write your own full-length quest. You can refer back to the sources when you think it would be helpful. Questions: What was the quest (or journey) in Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude, what adventures did they experience, and how was it accomplished? How is the call to the quest (or journey) different or similar in Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude and Rosas Adventure? What are common elements in a quest? Part 2 [70 minutes] 1. Plan your writing. 2. Write your quest narrative. You may use your notes and refer to the sources as you write. 3. Revise and edit the final draft of your quest narrative. Assignment: The two stories you read are examples of typical quests. Write your own quest that includes the traits of quests discussed in the Power Point and shown in the stories you read. Remember to include narrative strategies such as dialogues, characters, plot, setting, and closure. Review the attached rubric to see how your writing will be scored.
