Modeling a Procedure: Dismissal / Leaving Class.

Explain: The procedure for dismissal or leaving class begins two minutes before the end of the class period. All students will ensure they know and have copied the next days assignment. Put all of their books, papers in your backpacks and prepare for the teacher to review the topics covered in the lesson before dismissal. State the procedure: Today we will learn how to exit the classroom at the end of class when class is dismissed. Generate the rationale: (Why is this important?) This is important because all students need to know what homework assignments are due for the next days class and leave the classroom in an orderly manner. Explain and model the practice: I will announce that it is time to prepare for dismissal two minutes before the end of every class period. At this time, all students will ensure they know and have copied the next days assignment. All students will put all of their books, papers in your backpacks. At this point the teacher will review the topics covered in the lesson and review the next class homework before dismissal Check for understanding: I will ask the students What do we do first before class dismissal? What will the teacher do? What will the students do? Rehearse: I will verbally ask selected students to tell me the procedures for dismissal. Practice the procedure: At this time, I, as the teacher, will demonstrate ending the current instruction and prepare for dismissal by covering the lesson taught and reviewing what homework is due for the next day. Give specific feedback: I will provide feedback as needed on the spot and at the beginning of the next class. Reinforce: Reteach. I will reteach the above procedure on a daily, weekly basis until it becomes routine and standard procedure. Practice. I will practice any steps that need to be reinforced. Reinforce. I will review / reinforce the procedure for class dismissal and continue with feedback to the class.
