Course Overview

The Social Studies nine program continues to expand on the areas outlined in the Ministry Guide. The program will focus on Europe and North America from 1500 - 1815 investigating the following four topics and specific subtopics.

Society and Culture

Life in Aboriginal communities and in French and British colonies. Relationship between Aboriginal people and Europeans, and their roles in Canada. Artistic expression as a reflection of society. Development of individual and group identity. Colonialism, imperialism, and nationalism. Revolutions in England, France, and America. Canada's political and legal roots. Economic systems. Exploration, trade, and settlement. Growth of the fur trade. The industrial revolution. Geographic regions of North America. Exploration and trade routes. Impact of physical environment on trade and settlement. Aboriginal people's relationship with the environment.

Notes:
Quizzes: students with less than 70% on quizzes will be expected to rewrite on own time to improve mark. Unit/Chapter Assessment: students will be tested on the BIG questions related to the chapters and units covered in the class. These assessments will be content and skill based. Demonstration of Learning: students will be required to keep a portfolio of their classwork and projects which will demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the Prescribed Learning Outcomes for the course. *Technology Students are encouraged to bring their own technology (laptops, tablets and/or phones) to research and to help produce and organize work.
