Yelena German Music 233 Lesson Plan for 5th Grade May 1, 2013 Geography Objectives: Name the

states and their capitals Anticipatory Set: Play a song of the 50 states Direct Instruction: We would practice naming the names and capitals of each state for two weeks. At the end of the second week, students will go over the states and capitals and be assessed on it through a worksheet. Guided Practice: I would have them play the game where I would show the slides using PowerPoint with of State abbreviations which will be shown to the class one by one. Students will have to write the name of the state for each abbreviation. Independent Practice: Once the game is played, students will write state capitals for each of the states on their paper. When done, they will compare their answers with a person next to them. Required Materials and Equipment: Flashcards, worksheets, paper, computer, and a projector. Assessment and Follow-Up: Student will have to do an assessment/quiz worksheet, Name the State! which will be used to know which student(s) knows the states , capitals and their location on the map. These graded worksheets will be returned to students with feedback and a grade. Additional study guides will be given to those who did not pass the quiz to help them learn the states, capitals and locations.
