ABSTRACT

Effective Singing Instruction

in accordance with the 7th National Curriculum
-1st Grade Boys in High School-

Kyung-hee University Graduate School

Music Education
Kim Jin-young

Music has deep affective and aesthetic influence in life and is also a
large part of human life. When we consider music as something that is
intricately related to our lives, music education holds significant value.
In the 7th National Curriculum that is practiced nowadays, performance
based assessment.

Every man have different ways of life and different

talents. It would be very difficult to evaluate students by performance

based assessment. However, singing would probably be the most balanced
way to assess students. Singing lesson would be a hard time for high
school boys who are in their puberty. This is because they do not have
the standard of judment that is needed to realize their full talent and
voice power. To make it easier for them, there is a need research on the
effective teaching skills in music education.

- 62 -

In this research, current singing lesson in schools will be throughly

researched. How the textbook is dealing with the singing lesson will be
another core of this research. By taking a look at textbooks that deal
with singing, it will help teachers to recognize some of the weaknesses
and also help them learn. In this way, teachers will be able to find an
effective teaching skills for singing. The research can be summarized into
the following.
Firstly, the thesis deals with a need for music education, modern
movements toward music education, and instructional directions in music
education in the 7th National Curriculum.
Secondly, the thesis analyzed the singing parts in high school music
textbooks and suggested some of the effective teaching roles.
Thirdly, the thesis explained the posture, respiration, pronunciation, and
resonance

in

music education

to prepare

teachers for real singing

instruction.
Finally, the thesis suggested a practical lesson to give a specific idea of
an effective singing lesson to teachers.
Music is most beautiful when it is free. It is teacher's role to help
students to become creative and progressive in singing lesson, expressing
their emotions and thoughts freely. Moreover, it also depends on teachers
to improve students' standard of living and become well-rounded people
through music education. By helping teachers to realize some of these
music education, this thesis suggests an effective instructional methods in
singing lessons to prepare teachers for more systematic and professional
lessons.
