FOR THE FICTION CASE PAPER: 1.

Choose one set of TWO from among the following 3 authors in the case paper list: SET 1: VILLA, PIRANDELLO SET 2: LE GUIN, ASIMOV SET 3: JOAQUIN, LAWRENCE 2. Write a two-paged essay, typewritten, single-spaced, on short bond, following the format in the sample paper format. The case paper should first identify the theme common to the stories in the set you chose, and should examine how this theme was arrived at by way of the FICTION element in these stories [PLOT, SETTING, CHARACTER OR STYLE], that you think contributed most significantly to how each of these stories employed this element most potently to illuminate the point the author is putting forward. Note that the point of comparison rests mainly on what you think is the common subject/ topic around which the story revolves, and how this topic is specifically discussed in these stories. The clearest example of this is how we discussed "Hunger" and "Feast of the Dead". You are asked to evaluate how clearly the stories have shown the theme by way of the element/s with which you chose to judge these. You do not need to be using the same element for both stories, if you feel that the stories in your set used different elements strongly to arrive at the theme. I am looking here for an effective reading of the texts you chose based on the single theme you think these share, and how, specifically, these illuminated the point of the texts. I expect the statement of this theme to be specific--- for instance, not just a theme of violence, but how violence is seen as normal in a community, and perhaps what the consequences of this are. DO NOT EQUATE THE THEME WITH SINGLE WORD ABSTRACTIONS. This has to be contextualized in the stories in your chosen set. The essay shall be graded with a view to the efficiency of your integration of the stories you chose, in addition to the effectiveness of your thesis in this essay. The case paper is due in class on APRIL 30, TUESDAY. Use Monday the 29th as extra time for you to finish your paper. Late papers will not be entertained. Please do not forget to include the honor code statement at the end of the essay.
