This article discusses the ideas of Rashid Rida, an early 20th century Islamic scholar, on the caliphate and Arab religious nationalism during the colonial era. Rida believed the caliphate was necessary to unite Muslims but that it should be reformed and not a political authority. He thought cultural and educational reforms were needed to strengthen Islam and the Arab world in response to Western colonialism.
