University of Manchester - Filmmakers required

We invite proposals from professional film-makers to produce, shoot and edit a number of short pieces, based upon ongoing research within the School of Social Sciences (University of Manchester). Whilst we are not required to undertake a formal tendering process, we are obligated to secure several competitive quotes before a contract can be agreed.

Response Deadline: 25/11/2013 Notification of Decision: 2/12/2013 (with first meeting within 10 days) Deadline for Completion of Work [Provisional: First film to be completed by 31/1/2013; Contract to be completed by 30/4/2013]

Please address all enquiries to: Dr Chris Hewson: Impact Coordinator (School of Social Sciences) University of Manchester Email: chris.hewson@manchester.ac.uk Phone: 0161-275-4685 Background: The University has compiled a number of case studies for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) submission. These studies are designed to highlight the impact of our research with respect to its wider social significance, and with reference to research users (for instance: companies, policymakers, charities, etc.) We now wish to showcase some of our work through the production of a number of short films. These films will be at the forefront of our revamped web pages. Example: We envisage that the first film will be based on the following research on ethnicity:

The past fifteen years have seen intense debate around the social and political impact of rising ethnic diversity, with a range of stakeholders consequently reliant on the provision and diffusion of sophisticated and evidence-based analysis. Research undertaken at the University of Manchester (UoM) has risen to this challenge, reaching out to a variety of individuals and groups, providing timely research-based interventions to help shape, inform and improve policymaking and political discussion in this critical yet poorly understood area. Sustained collaboration, alongside the targeted dissemination of findings to key decision makers and civil society organisations has enhanced public debate, and shaped key interventions made by: Governmental actors (e.g. DCLG, GO-S, Electoral Commission), the three main political parties, Parliamentary Committees (APPGM & MAC) and a number of civil society organisations (e.g. Runnymede Trust, Changing Minds)

Indicative Format: Talking heads (lead research and colleagues) Location interviews with lead researcher, with a mixture of indoor and outdoor shooting (Manchester and London) including multi-camera set-up. Integration of new and pre-existing footage Post production to a high standard (graphics, idents, etc.) Ongoing consultation with lead researchers regarding the shape of the films (recognising the potentially sensitive nature of the subject area)

Requirements: Below, we summarise a number of parameters that must be addressed within your costed proposal: Each film will be edited into two versions (2 minutes and 8 minutes). We expect that there will be sufficient footage available for a longer version to be edited (by ourselves or others) at a later stage, if required. Whilst we would expect any contracted films (final number to be determined) to be completed in order (beginning with our example), please indicate any economies of scale (re: day rates and travel) that could be generated by filming two or more films in tandem. Whilst we will be responsible for setting up interviews and developing a script, please factor in consultation time to discuss ideas and progress with the University team.

Information needed: In advance of the specified deadline, please provide the following information with respect to the completion of one film: Details of the company or individuals who would undertake the project. A brief summary showing how you would envisage undertaking this task (750 words maximum) Day rates for shooting, editing and post-production, alongside other expected costs (e.g. travel and subsistence). Brief CVs, alongside examples of similar work (e.g. links to Youtube/Vimeo) Rough availability between 25th November 2013 and 30th April 2014. We recognise that it is often difficult to produce a precise budget, so we would expect to agree a final budget subsequent to our initial meeting. This will form the basis of a contract with the University of Manchester.
