One of my earliest memories of using a parabola was when I went to the discovery museum in panama. I used an old satellite dish to talk with my brother at the other end of the museum. The parabola of the satellite dish allowed my brother to hear what I was saying when he was at the focus point. The focus is the point from which the distance from that point and any point in the parabola is the same as the distance from that point on the parabola to a fixed line called the directrix. So anything that hits the parabola will bounce directly to the focus. Parabolas are useful in satellite dishes because it is a way to get accurate data. We use satellites for TV, Internet and Phones. The reason the parabola shape works to help these transmit data is because the transition doesnt have to be very accurate it just needs to hit the satellite dish and you will be connected. The parabola shape in other products like head lights of cars, flash lights, suspension bridges and in water fountains. The property that where ever struck with energy waves it would make its way to the Focus make it a very valuable tool.
