Jenna Bolle October 29, 2013 EDI 331-19 Halloween History Course: Social Studies Grade: 6 Length: one

hour Objective: Students will learn the history of Halloween and be able to apply the new information into a scary story. State Standard: 6 H1.4.2 Describe and use themes of history to study patterns of change and continuity. Anticipatory Set: Show a History Channel video that highlights aspects of the history of Halloween. Activities: 1. After History Channel video, question students: what Halloween traditions do you know of? 2. Create a list on the chalk board with the answers to the above question. 3. Show Prezi presentation about history of Halloween. 4. Handout pieces of paper to all students. 5. Give instructions to create their own scary story based on the information learned. Assign random numbers to each student. 6. After 10-15 minutes have students pass in unfinished stories. 7. Randomly pass out the stories and have them write their numbers on the story (this way the teacher will know who wrote what part of each story). 8. Give directions that they have to finished the already started story they have received. 9. Have a few students present their stories in front of class.

Assessment: 1. Teacher will walk around class making sure students are on task and understanding the assignment. 2. Finished stories will assess if they understood information presented. Closure: 1. Students will present finished stories explaining what information they found interesting and how they applied it into a scary story. Higher Level Thinking: 1. Students will be able to apply historical aspects they have learned into a creative story. Relevance: 1. Students will understand how Halloween has become to be the holiday to know today. They will be introduced to how certain traditions have come to be. No homework is assigned for this lesson.
