Root mean square value

The root mean square value for an alternating variable is effectively equal to a DC voltage that would dissipate the same amount of energy in a resistor as the alternating value itself in time T .

The rms value is the most important average for any electrical values, e.g. the quoted rating for a mains voltage U = 230 V corresponds to the equivalent energy dissipated by a DC voltage U = 230 V.
