According the U.S. Census Bureau, all but one county in the Defiance six-county area has lost residents between 2009 and when the 2000 Census was conducted. Also in the last year only two counties have gained in popula- tion. : Fulton County was the only county to increase its population estimate from the 42,134 estimated in 2000.
