Blood
The only Iluid tissue in the human body

A blood sample is spun in a centriIuge to separate its components
Hematocrit the percent oI a blood sample that is composed oI RBC`s
Also reIerred to as the packed cell volume should be ~45
BuIIy coat a thin, whitish-tan layer on top oI the RBC Iraction
contains WBC`s
The liquid portion oI a blood sample is called plasma





Physical Characteristics of Blood

Color range
Oxygen-rich blood is scarlet red
Oxygen-poor blood is dull red
pH must remain between 7.35 7.45
Blood temperature is slightly higher than body temperature

Blood Plasma

Composed oI approximately 90 percent water
Includes many dissolved substances
Nutrients
Salts (metal ions)
Respiratory gases
Hormones
Proteins
Waste products

Plasma Proteins

Albumin regulates osmotic pressure
Clotting proteins help to stem blood loss when a blood vessel is injured
Antibodies help protect the body Irom antigens

Formed Elements

Erythrocytes red blood cells
Leukocytes white blood cells

Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells
The main Iunction is to carry oxygen
Anatomy oI circulating erythrocytes
Biconcave disks
Essentially bags oI hemoglobin
Anucleate (no nucleus)
Contain very Iew organelles
Outnumber white blood cells 1000:1
