Who are they? What do they do?

What does a citizen do?


A responsible citizen works for the common good of all the people in their community not just what is good for them They volunteer to work without pay to help the people in their community Responsible citizens also care for their environment they recycle or reuse things to make new things.

Many people in history have been good citizens and helped their communities.
Can you name a historic citizens who have done something good for the community?

Rosa Parks
Born: February 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama She was a good citizen because she was an activist for the black community she helped to start a bus boycott.

Her statue is at the United States Capitol Washington D.C.

Cesar Chavez
Born: March 1927 in Yuma, Arizona A civic leader who spent his life working to make sure people were treated fairly. In 1962 he formed the United Farm Works of America to help get farm workers better pay and better working conditions.

Martin Luther King Jr.


Born: January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia American Clergyman and activist. Was a primary leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He worked for a non-violent solution to civil rights. At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Clara Barton
Born: December 1821 in Oxford Massachusetts She was a teacher, then she became a nurse during the Civil War. She founded of the Red Cross. The Red Cross helps communities during disaster relief and in wartime situations.

Millard Fuller
Born: January 3 1953 in Lanett, Alabama Self made millionaire. Founder of the Habitat for Humanity. The group helps to build houses for people who can not afford cost of a home. Homes are built by volunteers. Habitat ReStore recycles building materials to make money to build new homes.
