Tasks need to have real-world relevance

The mitt sewing class real-world relevance is the desire to maintain traditional sewing knowledge within the community. The lessons is one day in length and comprised of multiple steps. Participants will be encouraged to work together and share different perspectives. The facilitator will share techniques used by different sewers. Participants will be encouraged to work together. Retention of traditional skills will be combined with Slavey language and English literacy and essential skills activities embedded throughout the class. Participants will create a pair of traditional rabbit fur mitts to take home with them at the end of the session.

Tasks are best when comprised of complex tasks to be investigated by students over a sustained period of time Tasks should provide the opportunity for students to examine the task from different perspectives, using a variety of resources Tasks should provide the opportunity to collaborate Tasks can be integrated and applied across different subject areas and lead beyond domain-specific outcomes Tasks should create polished products valuable in their own right rather than as preparation for something else
