Technology Mediated Communication

Definition:Technology Mediated communication is defined as any communicative transaction that occurs through the use of two or more electronic device. Technology mediated communication systems in a variety of forms have become integral to the initiation development and maintenance of interpersonal relationships.

Scope:The way human communicate in professional, social and educational settings varies widely depending upon not only the environment but also the method of communication in which the communication occurs which in this case through computer or other information and communication technologies. Popular forms of TMC in include e-mail, video, audio or text chat. These settings are changing rapidly with the development of new technologies.

Advantages: Computer mediated communication breaks down geographical barriers to communication enabling collaboration through communication over distance.

People can exchange, store, edit, broadcast and copy any written document.

Disadvantages: Inhibitions related to computer/technology use problems with access to the technology. Absence of regulating feedback, lack of socio- emotional and non verbal cues.
