Due to the wide variety of nonelectrical signals of interest in the physical world (for an exhaustive list see [23]),

many different transduction mechanisms are needed to transduce physical signals into electrical signals (i.e., sensors), which can be processed by IC-enabled electronic systems, as well as from electric signals into physical signals (i.e., actuators).
