Unit 3 Chemistry - Types of Chemical Reaction Lab Directions: For each reaction do the following #1-5: 1.

Perform each reaction 4. classify the type of reaction 2. record your observations, 5. balance equation with states. 3. take pictures for the blog A. Obtain Copper (II) Nitrate and small 50mL beaker. Place a small piece (1.00cm x 1.00cm) of aluminium into the beaker and then pour the Copper solution over the aluminium until it is at least halfway covered by solution. 2. Floating on top of the copper solution 3. Pics 4. Chemical reaction 5. Al+ 3CuNO3 -> 3Cu + Al(NO3)3 B. - Obtain a 50mL beaker, pour about 20mL of D.I. water and a few drops of Phenolphthalein to it, record the pH. - Add about 5.0 mL of 1M NaOH, record the pH w/ pH meter & litmus paper, also test it for electrolytes w/conductivity apparatus. - Wash off the conductivity & pH sensor with D.I. water after you use it or it will corrode!!! - Put a thermometer in the beaker and add 5.0 mL of 2M HCl to the beaker , and measure pH & conductivity & temperature change. 2. pH of Phenolphthalein: pH6, turned blue pH of Phenolphthalein and 1M NaOH: pH14, turned purple It is a conductor before 2M HCl: 23oC after 2M HCl: pH1, 24oC , clear 3. Pics 4. Chemical reactions 5. C20H14O4 + H2O -> No change C20H14O4 + H2O + NaOH -> C20H14O4 + H2O + NaOH + HCl C. Pour a small scoop of CaCO3 (about 1-2 grams) into the same beaker from the reaction in section B. 2. Bubbly

3. Pics 4. Chemical reaction 5. C20H14O4 + H2O + NaOH + HCl + CaCO D. Obtain a shiny piece of copper and a pair of tongs, hold the piece of copper up to a flame with tongs. 2. Turned black, fire color changed from green to orange, no longer shiny 3.

4. Chemical reaction 5. 2Cu + O2 -> 2CuO E. Place a small scoop (about 2 grams) of sucrose (C12H22O11) into a crucible and heat it over Bunsen burner. 2. Turned black, smoke, bubbling, smell 3. Pics

4. Chemical reaction 5. C12H22O11 + 12 O2 -> 12 CO2 + 11 H2O

F. Observe the burning Bunsen Burner. 2. Blueish flame 3.

4. Chemical reaction 5. 2C3H8 + 3O2 -> 8H2+ 3CO2 G. Pour Sodium Iodide into a test tube with around 20mL of DI water. Add Lead (II) Nitrate to the test tube. 2. Cloudy yellow substance precipitate formed 3. 4. Chemical reaction 5. 2NaI + Pb(NO3)3 -> PbI + 2NaNO3
