devices focused on the advancement of minimally invasive technology for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis, has received FDA 510(k) clearance for two new products: the Totalis Direct Decompression System and the UniVise Spinous Process Fixation System. These regulatory clearances represent important milestones for VertiFlex as we rapidly expand our portfolio of innovative interspinous technologies, said Earl Fender, the president and chief executive officer of VertiFlex. We leveraged the unique benefits of our Superion Interspinous Spacer System and strong IP position, to develop these differentiated products to address two significant market opportunities. This accomplishment highlights the companys core strengths and fundamental commitment to provide physicians with multiple options to best treat patients in the least invasive methods possible. The Totalis Direct Decompression System is composed of a set of surgical instruments that utilize VertiFlexs interspinous access platform, which is comprised of both reusable and disposable tools that are used to remove targeted bone and soft tissue, to perform minimally invasive direct decompressions of the lumbar spine. As a representation of the companys core technology and intellectual property, the UniVise Spinous Process Fixation System is the least invasive spinous process fixation system available on the market to date, according to company representatives. It is a spinal implant system that fixates the spinous processes as an adjunct to lumbar spinal function, and was cleared last month. Both of these systems emerged after seeing the benefits from VertiFlexs established Interspinous Spacer System, a motion-preserving spinal implant system that is used to treat moderate lumbar spinal stenosis.

its first manufacturing facility based outside of Japan, with hopes that the new production plant, located in Thailand, will strengthen the corporations manufacturing capabilities. Roland DG Corp. is known worldwide for its portfolio of products that include wide-format inkjet printers, used to create indoor and outdoor promotional signs and banners; 3-D input and output devices, such as 3-D milling machines and engraving devices, that are used to create product prototypes, and customize jewelry and other accessories; and cutting plotters that adhesive-backed vinyl designed to display text and symbols used for promotional and display purposes. The company chose to establish a production center outside of Japan to reduce the manufacturing arms exposure to natural disasters and crises encountered in that country, such as the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Other benefits of establishing the factory particularly in Thailand include the manufacturing facilitys low operating costs, better procurement capabilities, and increased pricing competitiveness. We established this production center in Thailand primarily to plan and manufacture large-format inkjet printers for developing countries across Asia, but it will also serve Roland globally in the areas of design and development, said Masahiro Tomioka, president of Roland DG Corp. With Thailands good infrastructure, plus the availability of skilled labor and strong network of supporting companies, we believe this new production center will help us achieve our goals for global expansion. OC METRO - Roland DG Corp. opens first production center outside of Japan strengthen its position as a global manufacturer and distributor
through the 133 countries that it serves, Roland DG Corp. plans for the facility in Thailand to first establish itself as a central base for operations in the local region, then become capable of handling planning and design functions that will enhance the companys global operation. The new facility is equipped with the corporations own Digital Yatai manufacturing model, a production cell that has been globally acclaimed for its ability to drastically reduce human error in the production process by using revolutionary digital technology such as on-screen instructions and automated systems to monitor and assist employees. The construction of the Thailand manufacturing factory started early last year and became fully functional in October. In order to avoid flooding threats, the facility is raised six feet above ground level. By setting up this manufacturing facility in Thailand, Roland is now able to produce more affordable products that meet the increasing demand for wide-format inkjet printers in Asia, as well as the rest of the world, said Rick Scrimger, president of Roland DGA Corp. It is exciting to see the company expand its reach in this way. We look forward to passing on the many benefits of this new global center to our customers, not only across Asia and the surrounding regions, but here in the Americas as well.

Award-winning show also incorporates a unique interactive exhibit The North American Tour of the Tony Award-winning show War Horse will be showing at Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa, tonight through Sunday, Feb. 3. Audience members will not only be treated to seeing the performance of life-sized puppet masterpieces created by the Handspring Puppet Company in South Africa during the play, but will also have the opportunity to explore an interactive lobby exhibit featuring the artistry and history behind the show. Based off a novel by Michael Morpurgo, the play found success on stage in London and New York, and was also adapted into film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. The story of War Horse revolves around a young boy named Albert and his horse, Joey. The horse is enlisted to serve in the war, but Albert, who is not old enough to enlist, is left behind. The theatre follows the experiences of Joey, who eventually ends up in no mans land after serving both sides of the war, and Albert, who embarks on a great journey to find his horse and brings him safely home. Aside from the remarkable tale itself, the main attractions of the show are its two life-sized horse puppets named Joey and Topthorn. Engineered by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, the steeds are operated by a total of three performers each: two inside the horses frame and one in front of it. These performers vocalize breathing, snorts, and whinnies while operating the movements and the horses visual inhalations and exhalations, things that Jones explains may seem small, but have a huge effect. We realized that moving as little as a quarter of an inch resulted in an effect that you could see from the back of the theater. It's one of those little things that make the experience magical. Everyone mentions it afterward. Joey weighs 120 pounds and was handmade by 14 people. His almost 10foot-long frame is eight feet tall, and is made of a variety of elements that include cane, aluminum, leather, carbon fiber glass, resin, hosiery-like Georgette fabric, and Tyvek, a plastic-like paper. Orange County native Brian Robert Burns is one of the puppet operators in the North American Tour cast. As the primary puppeteer for Joey and Topthorn, he acts as the heart puppeteer that controls breathing and the front legs. [The job] is tremendously demanding. It draws people from all kinds of backgrounds. There are several former athletes. But there's no way to prepare yourself before actually doing the job. It's just one of those things where your body learns over time how to be more efficient, said Burns. The shows exhibit will highlight the artistry and history behind the show by giving the guests the chance to learn more about the Joey puppet, by watching behind-the-scenes footage featuring Kohler and Jones creating the puppets. Furthermore, attendees will be able to learn what life might have been like during World War I from Center Arts Teach artist Jon Monastero, a former history teacher and actor, who will be a part of the lobby exhibit as a WWI soldier. Puppetry artists from Segerstrom Center for the Arts Arts Teach artist Rogue Artist Ensemble will also play a role in the exhibit. *Tickets can be purchased through the Segerstrom Center for the Arts website. *Segerstrom Center for the Arts is offering a military rush discount to performances of War Horse for shows through Feb. 3. Active duty military personnel with current ID can purchase specially priced $20 tickets at the Center Box Office located at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa one hour prior to performances. Limit two tickets per ID. Tickets are available when rush is offered and subject to availability. To find out if rush tickets will be

TWO MOMS CAPTURE COUTURE ELIZABETH LEE
Publishe d: Fe bruary, 2013
The Orange County moms team up to create a collection of fashionable and functional straps Working mothers Lisa Grim and Erika Koorndyk co-founded Capturing Couture in 2009 with the idea of replacing the staple black camera straps (for both SLRs and point-andshoots) with more stylish and personalized options. Since their first strap creation, they have continued to monitor the demands of the market and have worked on ways to expand their collection. After getting their products carried by national retailers, they looked into international distributing. More than three years of growth and development have passed; Capturing Couture now has an expanded and diverse portfolio that offers camera Erik a Koorndyk and Lisa Grim straps, wristlets, camera bags, guitar straps, key chains, binocular straps, small cases, and other accessories, allowing consumers with more personalization than ever before. Capturing Couture products are offered online through their website, as well as through Amazon. The company also has an online blog linked to their website that keeps customers updated with recent company news, fashion trends and tips, DIY project ideas, and photography tricks. The co-founders were able to answer a few questions about their company and personal lives to help us understand the evolution of this quickly expanding company. Q: How did Capturing Couture come to be? When did the idea come up and how did the company start? Koorndyk: Ive always been in love with photography, and during a family vacation I stumbled upon an old 70s vintage camera strap, and it sparked an idea. When I came home, I shared my thoughts with Lisa and said, Do you think we could do something with this?? Grim: When she showed me the old camera strap, the wheels immediately started spinning in my head and I replied, We can TOTALLY do this! From that day on, we were obsessed 24 hours/day with making our dream a reality - gathering materials, trims, and fabrics, and began making prototype samples on our own home sewing machines. In our minds, we were about to create the next big thing and the sky was truly the limit...we were determined to achieve success. Our vision from the start was to create a high-end fashion forward brand, one where we could innovate and truly make a statement. Koorndyk: Soon we had transformed my garage and spare room into our 'makeshift' company. We pooled together every shared resource we possibly had from folding tables, to scissors, computers, sewing machines...you name it. I took all of the pictures of the product samples, and built our very first website. We both emptied our closets to style photo shoots and enlisted local friends to model...and soon CapturingCouture.com was officially launched. Q: What backgrounds do each of you come from (family, career, etc.) and how did you two meet? A: We both grew up in the same town, La Verne, CA and have known each other since junior high. After high school, we both went our separate ways and each got married, but then eventually relocated to Orange County to start our families. Both of our husbands are friends, and our children have grown up together since birth.

Grim: My background has always been fashion related, and I have a degree in fashion merchandising. Ive built a career in apparel merchandising, sourcing and product development for large clothing brands over the last 15 years. Koorndyk: My background includes both sales and marketing, related both to the electronics and real estate industry, and [I] also have a creative passion for interior design. Ive been an avid photographer and enjoy the creative expression it brings, especially with my family. Q: What is the dream for the company? Where does the company see itself a few years down the line? Grim: Our dream is to continue expanding with different unique product lines under our Capturing Couture brand umbrella, and build on additional distribution opportunities worldwide. From the photography and music market, we have also considered innovating into pets and childrens markets, as well as designer collaborations. Q: Are there any exciting new developments that are coming up in the near future that the company can tell us about? Koorndyk: Weve got some exciting projects in the works coming soon in 2013, including a new co- branded Chic Camera Bag line that is completely different than what we have now, and will hopefully appeal to a whole new customer. Were also set to launch our Camera Backpack design as well as Couture Gig Bags for guitars this year. In 2013 we started exhibiting at large tradeshows such as NAMM (music) and WPPI (photography) and will continue looking for the right venues to showcase Capturing Couture to new markets. Q: How has being a working mom shaped you as the owner of this brand? A: We both feel that ALL moms have to be great at juggling no matter what, and even more so when youre a working mom. Its helped shape the brand through our dedication, sacrifice, and being resourceful to make things work even when times are tough, weve never given up. Capturing Couture in a lot of ways became our baby, and were proud to show our kids a strong work ethic. Q: Do you have any advice that youd like to tell working moms today? And is there anything else youd like to add? A: Our advice for other working moms is always to dream big, and never feel like something is impossible. We believe its OK to strive to have it all and embrace your ambition and passion...from a healthy family, to happy children, and succeeding in business.

Robert Nelsen and others show their scouting skills on national TV Do you think you have what it takes to take on a Boy Scout? National Geographic Channels six-episode reality competition series Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout? features boy scouts competing against various men in challenges based on the Boy Scout Handbook. The series will highlight what being a boy scout truly means through the assigned competitions. We know Scouts are Prepared. For Life, so theyre up to facing the challenges life throws their way. Watching them face and overcome challenges on national television [is] a new way for people to get a glimpse of what it means to be a Scout, said Boy Scouts of Americas Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca.
WHAT TO DO
WHAT TO SEE
Irvine Boy Scout Robert Robin Hood Nelsen is featured in the series, along with Orange County Scouts Brenan Hawk Corbin from Corona del Mar, and Bobby Lash LeFevre and Garret Sharkfin Rios from Huntington Beach. Nelsens nickname on the show, Robin Hood, came from his skills in archery. 'BILLY ELLIOT' TO DANCE INTO SEGERSTROM CENTER As a junior a Tustin High School, Nelsen has served as class president for three years and maintains an academic grade point average of 4.43, all while being active in several campus clubs and several community programs such as the school basketball team, the Special Olympics Orange County program and the County of Orange Workplace Investment Board Youth Council. When I became a Boy Scout, I set my main goal, to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, and then in seventh grade, I decided that I wanted to earn every single Merit Badge after learning that Eagle Scout Travis Cochran of Troop 104 in Lake Arrowhead had accomplished the feat. I now understand how the Scouting program is like a stepping-stone to a better future as it teaches a young boy to stay focused and determined while accomplishing goals, said Nelsen. About a month after hearing about the Scouting-related reality television show from the BSA Orange County Council in February of last year, Nelsen went to Hollywood to be interviewed by a casting company producer. I had to also submit an action-type video doing different tasks and photos. After being selected as a finalist, I then went to a final audition tryout in mid-April at Camp Whitsett in the Sequoia National Forest to determine if I had the kind of abilities and personality that they were looking for to be cast in the show. The final audition went great, and I was cast for all six episodes. After getting a State of California Entertainment Work Permit, setting up a special bank account, and signing official contracts and medical releases, I was ready to go! During the show, he applied his Scout training and merit badge skills to compete in several high-adventure challenges set in Sequoia National Forest alongside his Scout peers. All the adults that participated in the show general had some kind of scouting background, and he found it interesting to see all their different perspectives. One lesson he has learned from being a part of this show is the importance of teamwork. It has been so much fun to meet all these other Scouts that I would not have meet if we were not on this show. It has been great to work as a team to beat (sometimes) the adults! It has been challenging to use all of my past training and merit badge skills to compete on this show and to demonstrate to others that Scouts are

Coming out of the entire experience, Nelsen shared that he wants to encourage people to try new things and have the determination to set and complete their goals. I tried out Scouting as a kid and fell in love with the different activities. Having the determination to follow through on new tasks is hard for most people. I believe that if you fail, who cares? he said. [Overall,] Are You Tougher Than A Boy Scout? gave me the opportunity to live out my passion for Scouting. It was a great experience!
