November 6th, 2013 Community Council Eco-friendly Trays Replace our current Styrofoam trays with sugar-cane pulp

p trays to create less strain on the environment. We have ordered 250 trays (1 case, enough for about one lunch session) for a trial run So far, fundraising ideas consist of: teacher-karaoke night and collecting donations as Parent Teacher Conferences Other fundraising ideas: An event like the gardening clubs pie contest Fundraiser movie night showing Trashed (a documentary following Jeremy Irons) Awareness in the School, creating the significance of this test run of different trays Advertise the concept at the upcoming (Dec 6th) International night, tying this idea of community and harmony with the earth to our own diverse backgrounds. Also talk about how we affect the world with our choices. Give students a choice to pick their own trays, so that they are conscious of the difference o Makes the topic feel relevant o Helps students care more Informational poster(s) Create a motto/slogan! Todays the day-- were trying the tray! Student voting on which is better Survey students on their opinion on the different trays to make sure they are functional Announcements Subcommittee to focus on this issue Noise in the Hallways: Possible Solutions 9th and 10th grade out-to-lunch would help decrease sound in the hallways because they will bring their noise outside There should be a survey of all 9th and 10th grade parents (not just PTA parents, because involved can sometimes translate to more protective) to find all of the parental opinions on this topic Even those who can leave dont necessarily do so, especially in the colder months The creation of a loud room in contrast to our current silent room. Student lounge Like the faculty lounge, the students may not use the space The space could be too loud/full and not serve its purpose for a large number of people

Change the large table in the 7th floor unmonitored lobby space to smaller group study areas to split groups up Disciplinary action against noise-makers (rules, consequences) Detention, forced study hall with monitors to control Student judiciary committee deciding punishments for consistently disruptive students Points system (like demerits) For next meeting: how do we structure student government interventions in the community? o Rules help students find the guidelines Many people do these offenses, so it would be hard to punish such a majority of the student body. Instead, we should focus on changing the culture itself of the school How would we keep track of repeated offenses? Putting disciplinary action in place would need adequate warning to the students because it does change the culture of the school Help students realize the amount of noise they are making Create a bigger display of the class schedules on the doors in areas where the noise level is a problem so students are more aware when classes are taking place. Students dont read the posters right now, or at least pretend not to be doing so. Needs an announcement from student government to accompany the new signs Put tables on the 7th floor hallway (near cafeteria) The creation of specific (and clearly labeled) food waste bins in that area as the 6th floor hallway would make it okay for students to eat there if they were responsible and cleaned up after themselves Carrels are being utilized productively right now, why change that? Students would eat at these tables as they did before Student use of empty classrooms Here at BHSECQ, now, students can be in unoccupied classrooms unsupervised as long as a faculty/staff member knows that they are there Teachers have discussed this as well In BHSECM, students are allowed to be in empty classrooms as long as the lights are on and the door is open Dance/gym rooms will not be opened because there is dangerous equipment in these rooms A few rooms can be chosen as a trial, in which we would follow the BHSECM rules Compile a list of empty classrooms for students Make the cafeteria a friendlier place Provide soap, gloves, and wipes in the cafeteria for those that want to sit in clean spaces or clean up after themselves

Paint the blinds (mural club?) Change the lighting in the cafeteria Put different wall material up in the cafeteria Cafeteria is a holding room, so items in the room should be fire-retardant Create tapestries/paintings on canvases to decorate the room The cafeteria is already often full during lunch hours Student government members being mindful in the community would influence behaviors Keep all classroom doors open to show that classes are in session and hopefully promote mindfulness Keeping the door open can make the student feel uncomfortable because there seems to be less privacy Sound-proof the doors of rooms where the noise is often a distraction Use the 8th floor as the louder spaces because classes are not in session on that floor Other schools and students use that space (like the auditorium) so BHSECQ cannot completely take up the 8th floor as its own
