Abstract
An old Serbian saying goes: Tell me what you eat,
and Ill tell you where youre from. In recent years this
saying does not apply as fully as it once did.
Serbia, a country in Southeast Europe, situated on
the Balkan peninsula is home to over twenty differently
named but in many ways similar nationalities and
ethnic groups. Not taking into account administrative
borders, a distinction can be made among three geocultural regions: the Panonian, central Balkan and the
Dinaric region.

This house, built on a crossroads, was host to

numerous people. Some were only passing by or stayed
temporarily, others settled for good. Various nations,
either as conquerors or passers-by, immigrants or
neighbors, through their culture influenced the life of
natives, which is noticeable in many segments of life
today. Innovations from foreign countries were also
introduced by a great number of Serbian intellectuals
educated abroad. Different influences widely reflected
on food and eating habits of the population, so the
essence of the cuisine of this area are domestic products,
along with old-Balkan and old-Slav tradition, with the
addition of oriental, partly mid-European and RomanMediterranean cultural influence.
