    There are three ways to avoid checkmate in chess: A) Avoid check by moving the king to a safe square, B) Block check by moving another piece to block the attacking line, or C) Capture the checking piece.     Checkmate: When the King is trapped and is also under check. Three ways to avoid checkmate are: A.

    A Avoid the check by running to a safe square. B. B Block the check by placing any other piece/pawn in the line of check. Remember, this doesnt work if the checking piece is a

    Knight.
    C. C Capture the checking piece. Remember, this has to be done

    without getting into check.

    IMPORTANT: If a capture of the checking piece (C) is possible, then it should always be tried first. When all three methods (ABC) to get out of check fail, it is checkmate.
