Math 200 Projects

Winter 2, 2012/13

Instructions: Working in a group of 3 people, use maple to complete one of the following projects. Projects will be presented in lab on the date listed. Grades will be based on completeness and clarity of solution, and represent 50% of your total lab grade. Upon completion of the presentation, the maple worksheet should be given to your TA along with a list of all group members. In addition, each group member should give a private list to the TA stating what percentage of the project was done by each group member. (1) Draw contour diagrams, level surfaces of several linear, cylindrical, parabolic functions. Date: 10/16/2013 or 10/17/2013 (2) Consider three points P, Q, and R, nd: (a) a vector perpendicular to the plane containing P, Q, and R. (b) a unit vector parallel to the plane containing P, Q, and R. (c) the area of the triangle PQR. Date: 10/23/2013 or 10/24/2013 (3) Consider the level surface xyz = 6 at any arbitrary point (a, b, c). (a) Find the normal vector to the tangent plane. (b) Find the equation for the tangent plane. (c) Make a Maple plot showing the level surface, the tangent plane, and the normal vector to the tangent plane. Date: 10/30/2013 or 10/31/2013 (4) Consider the family of functions f (x, y ) = k (x2 + y 2 ) 2xy . (a) Draw contour diagrams and gradient vector elds for three dierent values of k separately. (b) Use these gures that you plotted to classify the critical point at (0, 0) for each value of k . (c) Verify your answer analytically. Date: 11/06/2013 or 11/07/2013 (5) Consider three functions f (x, y ) = x3 + y 3 + 3xy 2 15x 15y , g (x, y ) = ex (1 cos y ), and h(x, y ) = 1 cos x + y 2 /2. (a) Find all critical points of all functions. (b) Classify each critical points as maximum, minimum, or saddle points. Date: 11/13/2013 or 11/14/2013 (6) Find the maximum and minimum values of the function f (x, y ) = x2 y 2 subject to the constraint x2 y k. Consider dierent values of k , such as k = 2, 5. Date: 11/20/2013 or 11/21/2013 (7) Find the volume of an ice cream cone bounded by the hemisphere z = cone z = x2 + y 2 . Consider dierent values of k , such as k = 4, 8.
