Experimental Procedure A. Verifying the Absolute Zero of Temperature Assemble the apparatus in the Fig 8.1 placing a 1000ml breaker on a magnetic stirrer if one is available and put a stage bar in the beaker. Make sure 500ml breaker is dry by pouring some acetone in the flask. Fill the water bath with room temperature water and start the magnet stirrer or use the steering rod. Connect the short piece of rubber tubing to the tubing in the stopper, and then moisten the rubber stopper and insert it firmly into surface if that is convenient. Clamp the U-tube manometer into position. You can rest the bottom of the U-tube on the lab bench surface. Using the Pasteur pipet, and add a few mL of water (you can add some coloring) to the U-tube manometer, so that the level in the left arm is at 4.0 cm above the lowest part of the U. Mark the level in the left arm changes, bring It back to the mark by adding a little water to the right arm, or by adding a little warm water to the water bath. Record the levels in the left and right arms to the nearest 0.1 cm. Record the temperature to the nearest 0.1oC. Record the barometric pressure in mm Hg.

Experimental Procedure B. Determining the Barometric Pressure Disconnect the rubber tubing form the manometer and pour out the water. Take the flask out of the beaker with room temperature water. Put the flask back in to the beaker and champ it in place, fill beaker with room temperature and check with a thermometer. Using a Pasture pipet, put water so that the levels are about 4 cm above the bottom of the U. Measure the h1 right and h1 left with a ruler and record to the nearest 0.1 cm. We need to compress the air in the flask just a little, cooling water to the right arm of the manometer. Add the water slowly; using you Pastures pipet. Both levels will go up but the right hand is faster than the left. Keep adding water until right hand side is near the top. Measure the heights of the levels in the right and left arms of the manometer and record them.
