Teacher Booklet
This learning centre guide is a hands-on resource put together for the purposes of equipping Grade 2 students with the skills needed to successfully understand, investigate, and interpret various aspects of the measurement strand of mathematics. It has been divided into six separate centres, each with a very specific focus, such that the successful completion of all six centres will demonstrate the students understanding of the majority of the measurement requirements within the Ontario curriculum. These six learning centres will highlight the following measurement skills: 1. Using standard and non-standard units; 2. Investigating mass and capacity; 3. Representing area pictorially; 4. Recording length, width, height, and distance through pictures, numbers, and words; 5. Understanding temperature and its effects on seasons and every day life; and 6. Time and time management. By completing these learning centres, students will be able to practise and develop their skills as knowledgeable mathematicians, and expand their horizons in regard to the various methods of measurement. They will begin to understand the value of mathematics, as they are involved in group investigations and experimentation, and will be encouraged to open their minds to the array of possibilities when it comes to measuring the world around them.

SUMMER 2016

Measurement Learning Centres: Introduction to Teachers

Learning Centre Mathematics Expecation
- Compare and order a collection of objects by mass and/or capacity, using nonstandard units

Description

Recording Device
-Checklist

Materials Needed
- Balancing scale - 1 shoe - 1 basket of classroom objects (pencil, eraser, notebook, stapler, paper, etc.)

1. How Much Does it Weigh?

2. Changing Seasons (Cross Curricular Language)

- Describe how changes in temperature affect everyday experiences - 1.6 extend understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to their own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts, and to the world around - Describe, through investigation, the relationship between the size of a unit of area and the number of units needed to cover a surface

- Students will demonstrate their understanding of mass, using non-standard units, by weighing a variety of classroom objects. They will first make an educated guess about which object is heavier, and then confirm their guess using a balancing scale. -Students will demonstrate their knowledge of temperature by drawing a picture of themselves in a particular season with the appropriate clothing. They will also include a thermometer on which they will draw the appropriate temperature related to the season.

- Rubric

-Multiple copies of the book "Bear Gets Dressed"by Harriet Ziefert -Art Supplies

3. Area & Art

- Have students compare the numbers of octagon pattern blocks and triangle pattern blocks needed to cover the same shape. Provide students with plastic pattern blocks (octagons/ trangles) and the Area & record how many octagons and how many triangles are needed to fill the scence.
3

- Checklist

-Hexagons/ Triangle pattern Blocks - Pencil Crayons - Area & Art Template

4. Rolling Ramps

Mathematics Expectations
- Record and represent measurements of length, height, and distance in a variety of ways (e.g., written, pictorial, concrete)

Description

Recording Device
- Anecdotal Record

Materials Needed
-Receipt Tape - Books -Piece of Cardboard - Empty Coffee Cans - Math Response Journal - Markers

- Have student investigate how the steepness of a ramp affects the distance an object travels. Provide students with books to create a ramp, and use cash-register tape for recording distances. They will then complete a math response journal.

5. Can I Measure With My Shoe?

- Estimate, measure, and record the distance around objects, using non-standard units

Students will investigate non-standard units of measurement by measuring a variety of classroom objects using paperclips of different sizes. They will also measure larger classroom objects and the perimeter of the classroom using a shoe.

-Checklist

- 1 basket of classroom objects (e.g. stapler, pencil case, whiteboard eraser, notebook) - 4 paperclips of varied size - 4 shoes - SMART Board

6. What Time is It Now?

-Tell and write time to the quarterhour, using demonstration digital and analogue clocks

-Students will - Rating Scale demonstrate an understanding of time by putting together a oneday schedule. This task will make use of digital and analogue clocks, as well as pictorial representations of that time of day.
