Calum Black Single Replacement Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to determine which metals are most reactive

and to create an order from most reactive to least reactive. Hypothesis: If some metals are more reactive than others, then the more reactive metals will be more likely to take an anion. Data: Silver Nitrate and Magnesium: Since Magnesium is more reactive than Silver, it will lose its electrons. So: 2AgNO3(aq.) + Mg(s) Mg(NO3)2(aq.) + 2Ag(s) 2Ag+ + 2e- 2Ag Mg Mg2+ + 2eSilver is reduced Magnesium is oxidized Single Replacement Reaction 2 Electrons transferred

Lead(II) Nitrate and Copper: Since lead is more reactive than Copper, it will not gain electrons. No Reaction will take place. So: Pb(NO3)2(aq.) + Cu(s) Pb(NO3)2(aq.) + Cu(s) No Reaction occurs. No Electrons are transferred. Conclusion: In conclusion, the more reactive a metal is, the more dominant it is to losing its electrons. The more reactive metal WILL take the anion and create a salt.
