A Hunger Artist: Locked in a cage, the artist is a circus sideshow act who fasts for 40 days at a time. He longs for attention and recognition but dies unsatisfied. The Metamorphosis: Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find that hes turned into a giant bug. No longer able to work and provide for his family, they see him as an embarrassment and a burden. His father throws an apple at him, and the wounds, both physical and mental, never heal; he dies alone, starved and depressed.
