Emily Basham November 7, 2013 Parts of a Letter Song Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.

4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.) Learning Objective: The student will be able to write a friendly letter that includes all five parts of a letter. Essential Question: What should we include in a friendly letter? Assessment: The teacher will collect friendly letters. The teacher will check student work for all five parts of a friendly letter and for appropriate content. The teacher will record student achievement in an anything chart. Activities/Procedures: Opening Hook and EQ: State the EQ. List parts of the letter on the board. Introduce the movements for the five parts of a letter. (Heading = touching their heads, greeting = point to their lips, body = move hands down their torso, closing = touch near the knees to their toes, signature = move their hands at their feet) Activities: The teacher will play the Parts of a Letter Song for the students (to the tune of the Adams Family). The first time through, have the students listen to the parts of the letter song. As the students hear the parts, they should do the hand motions. Repeat the song a few times with singing. Students will have a paper with the words to the song. The teacher will display a letter format on the board and discuss each part. The teacher will display a sample friendly letter (Friendly Letter Flipchart). Students will come up to the board to label the five parts of a letter. The students will each have a sample letter paper. The students will label their individual copies. Students will write a friendly letter to their teacher explaining why they should receive five extra minutes of recess. If students need extra motivation, tell them they will be rewarded with extra recess if they are convincing. Closure/Answering the EQ: The students will sing/move to the song again. Discuss the EQ with the class. Accommodations: ESL: Words to the song are read aloud and available on paper. The teacher will be available to offer explanation during independent practice. Special Education: Resource students and students with learning disabilities may receive extra time to finish. Students will benefit from multiple modes of representation (song, movement, examples). Early Finishers: Options 1) Think of another way to remember the parts of a letter. 2) Write a friendly letter to a classmate or friend about any topic. 3) Read silently.
