Unit 3 Chemistry - Types of Chemical Reaction Lab Directions: For each reaction do the following #1-5: 1.

Perform each reaction 4. classify the type of reaction 2. record your observations, 5. balance equation with states. 3. take pictures for the blog A. Obtain Copper (II) Nitrate and small 50mL beaker. Place a small piece (1.00cm x 1.00cm) of aluminium into the beaker and then pour the Copper solution over the aluminium until it is at least halfway covered by solution. 2. Copper wire turned silver, crystal like solids formed around. Copper coated in the silver nitrate. Copper dissolved.

4. Single displacement 5.2Cu+2Ag(NO3)(aq)---Ag+Cu(NO3)2 B. - Obtain a 50mL beaker, pour about 20mL of D.I. water and a few drops of Phenolphthalein to it, record the pH. - Add about 5.0 mL of 1M NaOH, record the pH w/ pH meter & litmus paper, also test it for electrolytes w/conductivity apparatus. - Wash off the conductivity & pH sensor with D.I. water after you use it or it will corrode!!! - Put a thermometer in the beaker and add 5.0 mL of 2M HCl to the beaker , and measure pH & conductivity & temperature change. 2. Phenolphthalein ph-5 1M NaOH ph-14 is conductive 2M HCl temp change from 22.0 to 23.0 degrees hotter, ph-2 is conductive.

4. Neutralization

5. HCl(aq)+NaOH(aq)--NaCl(s)+ H20(l) C. Pour a small scoop of CaCO3 (about 1-2 grams) into the same beaker from the reaction in section B. 2. the CaCO3 fizzed in the mixture then settled down making the mixture a milky white color.

3. 4.decompostition 5. CaCO3(s) + 2 HCl(aq) --> CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) D. Obtain a shiny piece of copper and a pair of tongs, hold the piece of copper up to a flame with tongs. 2. It caught fire and became black.

3. 4. synthesis 5.2Cu+O2----2CuO E. Place a small scoop (about 2 grams) of sucrose (C12H22O11) into a crucible and heat it over Bunsen burner. 2. the sugar melted and created a caramel brown color liquid, smelt of dream.

4. Decomposition

5. C12H22O11(aq)--------12C(s)+11H2O(g) F. Observe the burning Bunsen Burner. 2. blue cone shape flame with flashes of orange at eh top.

3. 4. combustion 5.C3H8+5O2---3CO3+4H2O G. Pour Sodium Iodide into a test tube with around 20mL of DI water. Add Lead (II) Nitrate to the test tube. 2.when the lead (II) nitrate was added the mixture turned form a transparent liquid to a bright yellow liquid. Precipitate formed.

3. 4. double replacements 5.2NaI(aq)+Pb(NO3)2(aq) --------- PbI2+2NaNO3
