Abstract Dr. Ryan Hanley on Luc Leplaes Wartime and Playtime Thesis: Through the use of the graphic novel format Dr. Ryan Hanley notes that Leplaes choice of, medium...proves remarkably successful (Hanley 17). One can acknowledge that Leplaes use of the graphic novel narrative masterfully and meticulously pronounces his tragic memoirs in an undisputed fashion. Furthermore, one can note that Leplae amplifies the association with his readers by silently noting that all were once children and can empathize with his experiences. Moreover, the dictation of the story through the point of view of a child and in a child friendly fashion achieves Leplaes goal flawlessly. Dr. Ryan Hanleys essay describing Luc Leplae and his autobiographies in the form of graphic novels skillfully opens up the painful yet playful world of the artist. One must note that the point of view that Leplae utilizes the perspective of a child in his autobiography. This is most advantageous because readers are able to identify with the childhood form of Leplae and subsequently feel his fear, pain, happiness, and hope as if they were his playmates. Likewise, the point of view of a child is a simple one. The emotions experienced by children are identified in the simplest terms and are understood. It is likewise important to acknowledge that the format utilized by Leplae is unique and beneficial to his autobiography. The use of a graphic novel, characterized simply as a novel in comic strip form, enhances Leplaes ability to reach his readers. Visuals aid in comprehension and the graphic novel has the

ability to hold not only visuals but also easily read dialogue. Additionally, the use of a graphic novel facilitates an easier reading process due to its fluidity. Similar narratives have been told through graphic novels in the past. Most famously Art Spiegalmans Maus 1 and Maus 2. Both works chronicle the lives of individuals effected by the Nazi Regime. The utilization of this type of story telling by both authors solidifies the effect of this format of expression.
