LESSON PLAN Grade: 3 Subject Taught: English Objectives: 1.

Students will be able to identify the subject and predicate in various sentences. 2. Students will be able to develop their own sentences with correct use of subject and predicate. Materials needed: 1. Construction paper 2. Marker 3. Paper 4. Pencil Introduction to the Lesson: Write a sentence on the board, ask students who the sentences involves/ what they are doing. (Identifying the subject and predict) Explain that the subject tells who or what the sentence is about. Explain that the predicate tells what happens in the sentence. Presentation: Provide examples of broken up sentences at the board, identifying the subject and then the predicate. Have students volunteer to come up to the board, and create their own sentences for the class. Have the rest of the class break down the sentence into subject and predicate. Practice: 1. Have each student twist brown construction paper to make a tree trunk 2. Cut out green construction paper and staple it to the tree trunk (top of tree) 3. Give students each a written sentence 4. Have the students cut the sentences (separating the subject from the predicate) 5. Glue the subject part onto the tree trunk 6. Glue the predicate onto the top of the tree Evaluation: Have the students get into groups of 4. Within the groups, have the students share their sentence trees. After sharing, have the students take out a piece of paper and write all of the different sentences that they can form using the 4 different subjects, and predicates on the various trees. Once they are finished, each student must get his or her sentences checked by the teacher. Discussion Questions: 1. What does a subject tell us in a sentence? 2. What does a predicate tell us in a sentence? 3. Why is it important to know the difference between subject and predicate?
