AJ Gannaban English 1103 Progress Memo September 27, 2013 Progress Memo # 2

My topic is about the American media and the effects of the stereotypes it creates that are geared towards the Asian population. Last night I did some research on my topic using the databases that our university has to offer and I found a gold mine of information in the online article Getting the message: Media images and stereotypes and their effects on Asian Americans. This article has provided me with a lot of information. Some information that I had not known before such as the origins of most Asian stereotypes began in the 1960s and they were actually positive. Hollywood began portraying Asians as the model minority emphasizing the strong family values, determination, and hardworking characteristics associated with being Asian. The type of media I am using is film and Television. This article actually uses a wide variety of media to prove its point that American media exposes its stereotypes to the masses through different facets. In this article I read about Connie Chung who was the first prominent Asian Female figure on television. She was a Co- anchor for the CBS National News and help instigate the push for more Asian influences on the T.V. screen.

On the big screen Charlie Chan was the most famous Asian actor during this period of time and set the foundation of Asian men being reserved, quiet, diligent, and studious through the character he played in his films. I like this type of writing in a sense that it is systematic, and basically structured to a certain formula where I know I am doing the assignment right if I just support my topic and answers with more research. I would want to be a dog if I could be any animal because they are mans best friends, adorable, and get spoiled rotten. Dogs have the life. All they do is eat and play and not have a care in the world. Its would be like being a kid forever.
