Sampling Techniques

Probability based sampling

Non probability based or purposive sampling

Probability-based sampling

Random sampling
every unit has an equal chance of selection unrestricted and simple sampling

Stratified sampling
the population is divided into subpopulations (strata) and random samples are taken of each stratum

Cont.

Cluster sampling
the total population is divided into homogeneous groups (or clusters) and a simple random sample of the groups is selected

Systematic sampling
selecting sample members from a larger population according to a random starting point and a fixed, periodic interval

Cont.

Example of systematic sampling

- Population=120 , Sample= 8 - Then, sampling interval =120/8=15 - therefore sample =11,26,41.,116

Non-probability based sampling

Judgment sampling
technique where the researcher selects units to be sampled based on their knowledge and professional judgment

Quota sampling
method of gathering representative data from a group
