02-KValliere Foldables (2 of 2) Envelope Fold (pg. 27) Third Grade GeographyGLCE: 3-G1.0.1 Use cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) to describe the relative location of significant places in the immediate environment. Materials Needed: 1 sheet of 8 12 by 11 colored paper for each student Scissors Glue Map cutout Colored pencils/crayons/markers Students will create an envelope fold that focuses on downtown Mount Clemens and its immediate environment. I used a map of downtown Mount Clemens for this activity, but other maps of other immediate environments may be used interchangeably. Students will use this as a way of describing relative locations of significant places in downtown Mount Clemens with the use of cardinal directions. Link for map: http://www.macombcountymi.gov/humanresources/map.htm After students create an envelope fold they will cut out the map of downtown Mount Clemens and glue it on the inside of the center of the folds. Students will have to pay attention to the cardinal directions labeled on the map so that it aligns with the labels they will add to each flab (north, south, east, west) on the outside of the fold. Students can use this as a test of their knowledge of relative locations of places in their own community. For an example a worksheet can be made for them to use with sample questions such as: (see attached worksheet.)
