State & Common Core Standards G.CO.10 Prove Theorems and about triangles base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent G.SRT.5 Use congruence criteria to solve problems and prove relationships in geometric figures Learning Objectives By the end of the lesson you should be able to: To use triangle congruence and corresponding parts of congruent triangle to prove that pairs of two triangles are congruent. Material Interactive Whiteboard Projector Worksheet 6 Tennis Balls 6 Packets (Two PVC pipes, nut and bolt) Internet Access Large Field Procedures Opening Story: Explain who Thales was. Elaborate that not only was he a philosopher, he was a mathematician. Describe how long ago he found a way to use congruent triangles to measure the distance a ship was from shore. With a tower and a compass he could create two congruent triangles. Draw the diagram and ask the students which property they could use to prove that his method would work. This will be done using a video on youtube and a mini lecture During the video students will work on a worksheet that goes along with the video. Battle Ship: Tell them that we are now at war. The general has told us that there is a fleet of four ships heading towards our coast. Luckily we have four cannons ready to fire at them. The problem is we do not know how far the ships are away from the cannons. Students will be given two PVC pipes, nut, and bolt. Outside there will be a line and six stations. The class will be split into six teams of four to five people. They must work together to use their materials to construct a "Tower and compass" to find the distance they are from a tennis ball which will represent a ship. Each team will have a different ship. They must also use the field markers to find their pace to measure the distance. After each team has found their distance they will report it to the teacher. Classroom: Back at the classroom the teacher will lead a discuss and ask how each group went about solving the problem. Students will use the worksheet as a guide The teacher will then reveal the four distances for each group.
