Show me the Shape!

This is an interactive, movement based activity to help get students up and moving and learn their geometric vocabulary! I chose this strategy for the Kindergarten grade level to get them motivated about their math vocabulary on shapes.

Steps:

1: Divide the class into groups of 4 students per group. Give students one piece of long yarn or string per group. 2: Using the Smartboard write the name of a shape on the board. 3: Ask students to work together to form the shape written on the board.

4: When each group has finished making the shape ask the following:

How did you create the shape? Is it similar to any other shapes we might make? What shape did you make? How many sides does it have?

Modifications

Modification: For special education students

you could show them the picture of the shape with the vocabulary word and have them make the shape and discuss. Modification: To make the activity harder you could eventually have students show lines of symmetry.

This activity can also be done individually at students seats.
