Because in the old days the Fews were used to make .anking settlements .y sitting on the .enches G to deal the e=change of money in the market place. 8hen any one of them .ecomes insolvent means that he is una.le to fulfill his re>uirements. 2hen his .ench was destroyed .y the customer G this practice given .irth to the word DBAN4#9P2E. Some other Authors are of the opinion that the word .ank is derived from a Cerman word D.ackE7 which means DFoint Stock 1undE. -n the early 1( )s the "uslim community was .eginning to reali5e the need for the active participation in the field of trade and industry. 2he ,indus had since the late 1'')s esta.lished a commanding presence in these areas and industry7 trade and commerce in the undivided Su.:continent was completely dominated .y them. Banking7 in particular7 was an e=clusive enclave of the ,indus and it was widely .elieved7 and wrongly so7 that "uslims were temperamentally unsuited for this profession. -t was particularly galling for 4hawa/a Bashir Bu= and A.dul #ahman "alik to hear the gi.e that "uslims could not .e successful .ankers. 2hey decided to respond to the challenge and took lead in esta.lishing this first "uslim .ank on the soil of Pun/a. that was to .ecome Pakistan in 0ecem.er 1( 2B .y the name of Australasia Bank %imited. 2he initial e>uity of the Bank amounted to #s ).12 million7 which was raised to #s ).! million .y the end of first full year of operation7 and .y the end of 3)th Fune 1( & capital increased to #s. ).$&3 million and deposits raised to #s &.&2' million.

1947 to 1974: Australasia Bank

Australasia Bank was the only fully functional "uslim Bank on Pakistan territory on August the 1 th7 1( &. -t had .een severely hit .y the riots in 3ast Pun/a.. 2he .ank was identified with the Pakistan "ovement. At the time of independence all the .ranches in -ndia7 ;Amritsar7 1:

Batala7 Falandhar7 %udhaina7 0elhi and Angra ;Agra<< were closed down. New Branches were opened in 4arachi7 #awalpindi7 Peshawar7 Sialkot7 Sargodha7 Fhang7 Cu/ranwala and 4asur. %ater it network spread to "ultan G Juetta. 2he Bank financed trade in cloth and food grains and thus played an important role in maintaining consumer supplies during riot affected early months of 1( '. 0espite the difficult conditions prevailing and the su.stantial set .ack in the BankAs .usiness in -ndia7 Australasia Bank made a profit of #s !)7))) during 1( &: '. By the end of 1(&) it had 1)1 .ranches. 9nfortunately it lost !1 .ranches in the separation of 3ast Pakistan which .ecame Bengladesh. 2he .ank did well in despite losing lot of its assets. By the end of 1(&3 the .ank had 1'$ .ranches in 8est Pakistan.

1974 to 1991: Allied Bank

1(& 7 the Board of 0irectors of Australasia Bank was dissolved and the .ank was renamed as Allied Bank. 2he first year was highly successful one@ profit e=ceeded the #s 1) million markB deposits rose .y over !) percent and approached #s 1 $) million. -nvestments rose .y &2 percent and advances e=ceeded #s 1)') million for the first time in .ank history. 11$ new .ranches were opened during 1(& and the Bank started participation in the spot procurement agriculture program of the Covernment. 2hose seventeen years of the Bank saw a rapid growth. After privati5ation7 Allied Bank registered an unprecedented growth to .ecome one of the premier financial institutions of Pakistan.
