Hydroelectric dam Grand Poubara - Phase 2 Department Project cost Financing Planning
Project Background The Government's objective is to achieve a rate of electrification of 100% in 2020 and to export at the same time, 16% of the production to neighboring countries. To achieve this, a blueprint of the electrical sector is being developed. It should also take into account the needs of new infrastructure and industrial development of the country as part of the strategy of the Emergent Gabon. Gabon has important hydroelectric potential with a total capacity estimated at 6 000 MW, of which the majority is still untapped. In order to cover the growing needs of the country and ensure the electrification of the whole of the territory, the Government plans to build 6 new dams that should enter into service in 2020. Project Description In phase 2, the objective is to increase the production capacity of the hydroelectric dam of Grand Poubara by the installation of 2 turbines of 40 MW and the elevation of the dam of restraint (of 411 m to 432 m) in order to increase the production capacity of the hydroelectric dam of Grand Poubara. Sinohydro (Chinese company) is responsible for implementing this project. The electrical energy produced by the dam will feed the installations for the extraction of manganese from Moanda and Franceville and the future complex metallurgic of Moanda. It will also support the energy supply of the city of Franceville metal. When it will be up running, the Grand Poubara Dam will produce 240 MW of electricity.
