Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Releases Facts About The Steel That Will Be Used in the new Stadium
November 25, 2013, Minneapolis, MN The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority today released facts about the procurement of steel for the new Minnesota Multi-Purpose Stadium: The total steel budget for the stadium is $82 million and includes the purchase, fabrication and erection. The purchase of the grade 65 steel totals $5M, or 6% of the total budget. The remaining $77 million will be spent with domestic companies procuring additional steel for other parts of the building. There are 18,000 total tons of steel required for the construction of the new Minnesota Multi-Purpose stadium. 3,600 of the 18,000 tons are required to be grade 65, which the project is ordering from ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg. The balance, 14,400 tons, will be grade 50 steel, will be manufactured and purchased in the United States. The Luxembourg company that will produce the grade 65 steel used in the new stadium is ArcelorMittal. ArcelorMittlal owns and operates facilities on the Iron Range in Minnesota the ArcelorMittal Minorca Mines and the Hibbing Taconite Mines.

There are no steel manufacturing plants in the United States that make grade 65 steel. Grade 65 steel is being used for the main truss that will be used for an extremely long span of the roof. The long span steel required to be a certain length and strength that is only manufactured in Europe. The fabrication and erection of the steel structure will be done by two Minnesota companies: LeJeune Steel Company will purchase the steel and fabricate, and Danny's Construction Company will complete the erection of the steel. Groundbreaking for the new stadium is scheduled for December 3, 2013, and will be completed in time for the 2016 Minnesota Vikings season. ###
