Planning for whole group instruction-present the content the same as any lesson (strategies, models, clear learning objectives, examples) Organizing groups-mixed by ability, gender, and ethnicity, four or five members Planning for team study- key is material to guide the interactions, group instruction and team study are in line with the learning objectives Calculating base scores and improvement points-equal opportunity for success (all students recognized for efforts) test score compared to base score

Instruction- focus on specific concepts or skills, when students understand move them to team study Transition to teams- students must learn to work effectively in groups, why improvement points are important Team study-opportunity to practice new content and receive feedback from other members (monitoring is key to ensure all member involvement and social skills Recognizing achievementassess students normally and then count in and calculate their improvement points and team awards

Teachers need to be sure groups are working productively Teacher involvement to assist when students are having trouble Assessments will be done normally just the same as any other lesson (ex: quiz or test every Friday)

Improvement points are given if their quiz grade is above their average Team awards are calculated by averaging the teams improvement points Students should be reminded teams dont compete against one another, just their past scores Teachers must be careful in making sure some students grades arent inflated improperly

So what? What is important to understand about this?

This is a great learning strategy to implement student interactions as well as encouraging efforts in the classroom and allows all students to succeed and reveals to teachers the benefits as well as precautions to this strategy.
