An assignment in three genres.

Conveying the essence of the SRTOL statement to the public.

Analysis When writing for public it is important to be brief and clear, because usually we are very busy and dont pay attention to long articles or advertisements. I had a clear idea what to move forward, that is why I thought the slogan on a bus would suite best. You cant write a long story about difficulties that teachers or professors face in terms of variety of dialects, as there are only 10-15 words in your disposal. From one side, it simplifies everything: you need one thesis, thats all. But how to capture peoples attention? How to make them believe that what is written is true? From this point brevity becomes challenging. I used following conventions to solve the problem:

o Every day language for directness o Short sentences with dots in the end, to show determination. o Big bright letters (contrast) Thus, people unconsciously read 3 short sentences in less then a second and information gets into their brain. Target is hit. Sharing information with friends ( letter from a club president to members)

Analysis

I chose a letter format because I had no idea how I would deliver that idea about dialects to my friends using a writing genre. I didnt want to write a Facebook post or a text, because I would never do that in real life. In my opinion, a letter from a club president to members is one of the most appropriate forms. Conventions: o o o o o Audience- a particular group of people Clear subject of the letter Informal salutation (Hey Guys) Spaces between paragraphs make a letter easy to read Difference in color highlights important information

This letter only implies the topic, because I dont want to overwhelm readers by a long treatise explaining why dialects should be free of any constraints. However, in a letter I can write more than in a slogan. Now my aim is to evoke an interest, and then give an opportunity to learn more about the problem and try to find a solution.

Academic audience (passage from an essay for scholarship) In addition, I have a particular interest in investigating global connections. I plan to write a thesis about the diversity of dialects and their preservation. This problem is extremely up-to-date, because there are a lot of students suffering from pressure in universities. Despite the fact that writers all over the world are trying to affirm students right to unique patterns of language (for example, an old article from CCC that includes resolution adopted by its members in April 1974), some social groups are trying to exert their dominance over others. Im analyzing statistics related to this subject in order to become more familiar with the situation and propose an effective solution Analysis I chose a part from an essay in order to show that it is possible to intersect 2 ideas: the dominant one (an application itself, that implies an attempt to persuade a committee that I deserve a scholarship) and subsidiary( SRTOL itself). When writing in an academic style it is important to try to keep an official writing language, exclude abbreviates, use terminology. Conventions: o Structure: statement of the problem, development, conclusion o Smooth connection with the dominant idea o Correctness of using language is important

o An attempt to persuade a reader (last sentence) Writing a scholarship essay implies the same procedures as other formal essays. However, there is one important detail: an essays purpose is not a reflection or an interpretation of information, but convincing other people. A lot of employers ask applicants to submit an essay with reasons why a particular applicant has an advantage over others.
