Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines


Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, one of the most powerful storms on record, made landfall in the Philippines on 8th November causing widespread devastation across 36 provinces in 9 regions (Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Bicol, Northern Mindanao, Davao, and Caraga). The typhoon then weakened before it reached Northern Vietnam and South-East China on 11th November. The number of affected has also risen to an estimated 11.8 million people, with the Government confirming 4,460 people deaths to date.

How Islamic Relief is helping now


Islamic Relief currently has 3 projects underway: -Distribution of 1,500 Tents and 3,000 tarpaulins (funded by IRUSA and DEC) IRs largest ever single consignment of humanitarian relief was delivered to Cebu on Thursday evening and loaded into a central warehouse. Consisting of 110 tonnes of tents and plastic sheeting/tarpaulin the project will target 15,000 individuals in the severely typhoon affected two cities of Bogo and Leyte. The specially chartered Boeing 747 contained 1,500 family sized tents (23m) and 3,000 units of plastic sheeting (24m) and was delivered from Lahore, Pakistan. -Emergency Food Packages Distribution Immediate and urgent food relief to at least 20,000 families in heavily affected northern Cebu and Bantayan Island. -Emergency Shelter Kits Temporary shelter kits will be provided to at least 2,000 families in northern Cebu provinces.
