Introducing electronic blasting systems and its potential

application in Iranian open pit operations
ABSTRACT:
Electronic blasting technique is a new generation of software and hardware that have recently been
developed to improve the results of blasting operations in mining and civil works. The main elements of
this system include electronic caps, logger and firing machine which interact using special software to
control the blasting phenomenon. Electronic detonators are a set of programmable caps. Logger is a
portable instrument applied for current testing and delay assignment. Calibration of the caps, planning of
the delays, testing of the system, supplying of the initiation energy and signal transmission are done by
firing machine. Electronic blasting systems have been tested successfully in several large blasting
operations in order to cut the costs corresponding to the side effects of the blasting. Applications of the
electronic blasting systems are usually limited to the cases that the benefits related to the improvements in
blasting results exceed the extra costs of the electronic caps. The paper presents the principles of
electronic blasting systems and potential of its application in Iranian mining industry.
