PROFIBUS is the bus system for communication in small cell networks and with field device. PROFIBUS is based on the European standard EN 50170 and is implement ed worldwide in the field envi ronment. By meeting the requirements of EN 50170, PROFIBUS ensures that it is open to the linking of components from other manufacturers which comply with the standard. Siemens supports the con nection of further field devices to PROFIBUS by marketing ASICs and submodules as well as providing technical advice for manufacturers of PROFIBUS components. Three protocol profiles are available for the various re quirements and applications in the field and cell areas: PROFIBUSDP (distributed I/Os) S PROFIBUSFMS (field bus message specification) S PROFIBUSP A (process automation)

Application
PROFIBUSDP PROFIBUSDP complies with EN 50170. PROFIBUSDP is character ized by fast cyclic commu nication with small data quan tities. Data transfer rates up to 12 Mbit/s are possible. PROFIBUSDP allows distrib uted ET 200 I/O stations, hu manmachineinterfaces and field devices to communicate with the programmable con trollers. In addition with SIMATIC S7/M7, it is possible to program, startup, test and diagnose the complete au tomation system via the field bus.
PROFIBUSFMS PROFIBUSFMS complies with the PROFIBUS standard EN 50170 and is designed for communication with more complex field devices with an FMS interface and for smaller cell networks (10 to 15 stations). Data transfer rates up to 1.5 Mbit/s are possible. PROFIBUSFMS and DP All protocols are based on the same bus components and can be operated together on one line (combination master). PROFIBUSP A A is the protocol PROFIBUSP profile for process automa tion, especially for the intrinsi callysafe area. PROFIBUS provides solutions ranging from the field area to the cell area.

The ASInterface can be con nected to PROFIBUS directly to SIMATIC S5/S7 via the CP 3422 (available soon), CP 2433 or CP 2430 master modules or directly to a PC via CP 2413 and S via a DP/ASInterface link

The data transfer rate is se lectable in stages from 9.6 to 1.5 Mbit/s. For extremely timecritical distributed I/O applications, data transfer rates of 3, 6 and 12 Mbit/s are additionally possible. The maximum segment length depends on the data transfer rate. Optical network The fiber optic version of PROFIBUS is immune to elec tromagnetic interferences. It is suitable for long distances and offers a choice of plastic or glass fiber optic cables. The stations are connected to the optical network via an op tical bus terminal or optical link module (OLM). OLMs enable the creation of an optical network with a linear, ring or star structure.
The maximum distance be tween two OLMs is 15 km (9.3 m). The data transfer rate is selectable in stages from 9.6 to 1.5 Mbit/s. The maximum segment length for the optical version of PROFIBUS is independent of the data transfer rate. Mixed networks Mixed structures based on electrical and optical net works are possible. The transition between the two media is provided by the OLM. For communication between stations on the bus, there is no difference between the twowire and fiberoptic sys tems. Up to 127 stations can be connected to a PROFIBUS network.
